I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and Iā
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
– The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
The poem The Road Not Taken written by Robert Frost, was an absolute inspiration for me. I felt seen by literature for the very first time, and in the midst of uncertainty, it helped me choose who I wanted to be. It came to me just in time, because I’ve always felt like someone who travels through less worn grass, as Mr. Frost would say. I was a teenager at the time, and I was very concerned about what my values could eventually be if I didn’t stay away from certain situations, from which facing some social isolation didn’t seem as bad as being carried away by others and bad decisions.
There is a certain pride in knowing that you’re doing what’s right for you, specially if it involves defying social norms. Some people find it very hard to swallow, but there’s a price we end up paying if we do everything within the eyes of society. Not caring however, is a habit you learn to master little by little. Solitude is the first thing that comes along, as it’s not popular being an outcast. The reward for choosing that path not taken before, is finding your identity in a sea of ideas you thought were yours but actually, aren’t. I want to clarify – I’m not a huge advocate of ditching all social norms and living life as you please. There are a certain rules of the game that should be followed if we want to coexist with other people. So this isn’t about resenting all social features, just the ones that take us further down roads that aren’t ours to begin with.
